Automated Print Code Replacement Example

This is intended to show a simple example of the automated replacement of the print code/keyline.

Last updated on 12 Jan, 2026

Note: Effective July 11, 2023, we will update our processes by implementing support for a new automated print code tag. This new print code tag will read "$PrintCode" and the previous print code tag "ScoutAutomatedPrintCode" will continue to be supported on titles prior to this date. Thus, you may see the old "ScoutAutomatedPrintCode" tagline in Lakeside Scout on titles uploaded prior to this date.

The new "$PrintCode" tag will improve the automated placement of your print code, as well as make the tag more universally accepted by other print manufacturers that can support automated print code replacements.

We encourage users to start using the $PrintCode tag on any new files being uploaded, to include corrected copyright page, as time allows. As mentioned above, the previous "ScoutAutomatedPrintCode" will continued to be supported on all legacy work and any work in progress.

There is no need to alter your files that are currently in Lakeside Scout Portal or your work in progress that have the older "ScoutAutomatedPrintCode" tag.

In the event you upload a file in the near future with the older "ScoutAutomatedPrintCode" tag, it will still continue to be supported.

Lakeside Book staff will apply the new print code when titles are uploaded from the Lakeside Book archive.

The current, default format contains the printing run and the calendar year when the file is delivered to manufacturing.

• If the tagline font is fully embedded and not subsetted, the automated print code will appear in the requested font at the requested point size and color.

• If the tagline font is not fully embedded and is subsetted, the font and point size cannot be honored. In this scenario, a member of our support team may reach out to request a new file be uploaded with the font fully embedded.

Here is an example of the "$PrintCode" tagline as seen in Lakeside Scout.

NOTE: This example also shows an account with auto alignment turned on so, by default, the print code is centered on the replaced text string. See this article for alignment and format options.
